I... I just have to say how much I love Doflamingo's crew.  Thats all. Maybe I should draw them...

Thing is, this is the most verstaile crew in the series yet, second only to the Strawhats themselves. And that's saying something.

Just a heads up, I'll be gone from the 23rd to some of the 26th. I got something sheduled for the 24th though ;)

But before I go to grandmother I decided to take the night and watch a movie. I'll be sitting in a car for 2-3 hours anyway, so it doesn't matter if I'm tired.

And of all the movies, I decided to finally watch Equestria Girls. I went in with very low expectations thanks to a certain community, but I'm glad to say I actually enjoyed the movie. Its not perfect (we'll get to that) but I wouldn't say its bad either. I may do a drawn review later, but lets get my thoughts down for now.

Quick summarize for everyone who don't know the movie.

Its a movie that takes place in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic universe. The newly coronated Princess Twilight Sparkle finds her magic crown stolen by a new villain called Sunset Shimmer, who leaps into a portal to an alternate universe. Since to many people entering could create a disaster, Twilight has to go through the portal alone (though Spike, her trusty sidekick, rushes in after her). Once on the other side, they find themselves in a humanized version of their universe complete with parallel human version of all the ponies. Twilight, now transformed into a human, has to fit in and win a competition to take back her crown from Sunset Shimmer.

Actual Review

Designs

So, first things first. HUMANS! EVERYBODY RUN THE PONIES ARE HUMANS AUUUGH! *cough**cough* err... yeah.

But, lets start of with the human designs. Humanization is something that is very common in fan art, so seeing the official take on it was interesting. I like that all of the ponies kept their skin colors, as that erased a big debate AND helped keep the MLP:FiM feel.

But unfortunately, not everything was well. When I first saw the designs, I was honestly upset that they followed the classic doll-fashion: extremely thin bodies, body-and-face clones... even their clothes, while very nicely designed, were quite similar in terms of what kind of clothes. And everything just had that marketing air around it. Euugh. I don't hate the designs (on their own they're actually quite nice), and to be honest all of the ponies are copies too, but it just doesn't fit in with what kind of show this is. I expected some more... diversity.

Some of the ponies were also weird. I still think they did a great job on keeping the feel of the main six and the villain, but some, especially Snips and Snails, were almost creepy.

So, I have to give the design 5/10 - moderate. I love the look of the main six by themselves, but in a larger perspective it just doesn't fit and falls into main-stream stereotypes. Add to this a variety of weird designs, and well... yeah. What makes up for it however is the personalities, which we'll get to later.

Charaters & Story

One thing I'm very pleased about in this movie is that the main six FEELS like the main six. Their personalities are the same, and it was a relief to see that even if they were transformed into bratz-esque marketing material, they still keep the stereotype-breaking personalities that made me love the show to begin with.

And though I have a feeling some will disagree, I also liked seeing Twilight and Spike on their own, properly. Even if they gang up with the parallel main six later on, it still felt like the first time in ages we got to see Twilight and Spike being forced to rely on their own strenght. Friends are super-important, don't get me wrong, but there are times when you need to take a break and rely on yourself. Just take it from an Introvert that I appericate this approach, even if it was not intended.

The other positive thing from that is that the movie wasn't cluttered - by focusing on Twilight and Spike only, we got a fairly solid story.

But now I've talked about that long enough. Lets get to the new introductions and the actual story.

To make it short, the story is pretty bland. What made the movie enjoyable was the charcters' antics, not the story. Granted, a charcter driven movie is a pretty good thing, but it feels like they could have done so much more. Sunset Shimmer was entertaining and I like her guts. Flash Sentry... lets just hit him with the stereotypical love interest stamp. *stamps*. I barely cared for him. I love that Twilight got a love interest (she was just too cute), but they couldn't have made him more boring. Granted there was little room for developement, but still.

Lastly, the ending felt a bit... out of place. You got this place that knows nothing about magic, and then suddenly KABLAM MAGIC! And everyone accepts it (or as Spike puts it,"a talking dog is the most weird about all this?"). It comes out of the blue with very little build-up and just feels out of place compared to what the rest of the movie is about. Once again, its not bad, its just... underwhelming. And though I do like that they accept Sunset by the end, her suddenly breaking into tears and everything felt more awkward that emotional.

So 7/10. Bland story, stereotypical love interest and out-of-the-blue ending. But what ups it all is ultimately the characters. I had quite a few laughs, and I think they portrayed the characters wonderfully. Especially Twilight and Spike.

Summary

I feel like I can summarize most of this already. Boring story, debatable but likable designs and wonderful character representation, along with a few downfalls here and there. Overall, I'd give the movie:

7/10 - Good

As long as you don't take it too seriously, I'd reccomend the movie. I'll add a mention to some of the wonderful references in it as well. Loved the Transformers one! The biggest charm is without a doubt Twilight - seeing her interact with the unusual world was a lot of fun!

And while the movie does end up as a barbie-girlie marketing devise, unlike a majority of its sisters it does actually stand out with the main sixs' different personalities and the action. So considering what it is, its actually pretty good. Though the whole air of marketing does drag the movie down a few notches.

All in all, most definely not a perfect movie, but I wouldn't say its bad either. If you like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and you don't take it too seriously, I'd say to give it a try!

Just next time Hasbro, make it about the ponies.

The whole One Piece fandom is exploding right now, haha XD
